First Line of Defense in Material Screening

YPT Scalpers

A Scalper—also known as a grizzly scalping screen or primary feeder scalper—is a heavy-duty mechanical separator designed to remove oversize rocks, boulders, and debris from run-of-mine (ROM) or crusher-feed material before it enters downstream crushing or screening stages.

Scalpers operate as the first step of mineral-processing circuits to protect crushers, improve throughput consistency, and enhance overall plant efficiency

They are often integrated with vibrating feeders or grizzly decks and are engineered to handle large rock lumps (sometimes exceeding 1 m in diameter) and high-impact loading.

Areas of Application

Scalpers are installed wherever feed material must be sized or cleaned before primary crushing:

  • Primary feed stations of open-pit and underground mines (gold, copper, iron-ore, aggregates).
  • Crusher protection placed ahead of jaw, gyratory, or impact crushers to remove fines or sticky clay that cause blockages.
  • Aggregate quarries and construction material plants for separation of topsoil, vegetation, or overburden.
  • Recycling facilities where large foreign objects (steel, concrete, debris) must be removed before crushing lines.
  • Bulk material handling systems in mining and cement industries to ensure uniform feed size distribution.

Principle of Operation

  • Feed Delivery: Material from haul trucks, loaders, or hoppers is dropped onto the scalper deck.
  • Vibration / Motion: Decks are vibrated by unbalanced motors or exciters to separate undersize material through the grizzly gaps or screen apertures.
  • Separation: Oversize rock remains on top and is directed to a crusher or dump chute. Undersize fines fall through and bypass the crusher, joining downstream conveyors or secondary screening circuits.
  • Discharge & Flow Control: Adjustable angle, stroke, and amplitude allow tuning for sticky or wet feeds.
  • Integration: Units often combine with pan feeders to regulate feed rate and absorb impact energy from large rocks.

Important Considerations:

  • Blinding / pegging:

Caused by clayey or wet feed — use larger spacing or vibration cleaning.

  • Cracked grizzly bars:

Overloading or improper feed drop height.

  • Reduced throughput:

Check amplitude, drive balance, or deck inclination.

  • Excessive vibration:

    Inspect bearings and spring integrity.
